LIST: #ML52 commemoration events, activities in UPV

Here is a list of events and initiatives organized by UPV student councils, progressive groups, and organizations ahead of the 52nd Anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law on September 21, 2024.

On September 21, 2024, the Filipino nation will commemorate the 52nd Anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines during the Marcos Sr. dictatorship.

In UP Visayas, student councils, progressive groups, and student organizations are coming together to resist historical distortion and the proliferation of Marcosian narratives on the late dictator’s bloody regime through various in-campus activities and initiatives as early as September 13, 2024.

Here is the list of events and activities leading up to the #ML52:

EDUCATIONAL DISCUSSIONS

The UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences Student Council will be conducting series of educational discussions which will be done in two separate days, dubbed as ED Fest.

The ED Fest Day 1 will discuss the topics Student Power and The Mercenary Traditions of AFP-PNP that will happen on Friday, September 13 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the AS Building, SocSci Lobby. The ED Fest Day 2 will feature the topic Fact-checking the Golden Age which will happen on Monday, September 16 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the AS Building, SocSci Lobby. Capping off the ED Fest is a Lecture Series on the Martial Law in the Philippines on Tuesday, September 17, at MILC AVR from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

MARTIAL LAW EXHIBIT

Various student organizations will also put up both online and physical exhibit as part of #ML52 commemoration activities.

Kabataang Artista para sa Tunay na Kalayaan – UPV (KARATULA-UPV) have organized an Online Literary and Poster Exhibit on their social media platforms. The online exhibit runs from September 9 until September 19, 2024.

Students can participate in the online exhibit by sending their literary pieces and posters to KARATULA-UPV.

As part of the CAS SC’s Forget Me Not project, the UPV Sociological Society, UP Sakdag, UPV Discursus, PH Pub, and UPV Biological Society will participate in the week-long Panel Exhibit which the students can access from September 16 to September 20 at the AS Building SocSci and BioDiv Lobbies.

CULTURAL EVENTS

As a buildup activity for #ML52, there will also be a two-day film showing of Martial Law-themed films to be screened for free at the MILC AVR to be organized by the UPV CAS SC. For the first day, September 19, the screening schedule will start at 9:00 AM and the last screening will be at 3:00 PM. For the second day on September 20, the first screening will start at 10:00 AM and the last screening will start at 4:00 PM.

Several student councils have also organized a production work in preparation for the #ML52 mobilization on September 21.

The CAS SC is organizing PINTA at CHIKA, a combination of production work and educational discussion as buildup activity for #ML52 commemoration. The PINTA at CHIKA will be on September 14 and 15 at the Lover’s Lane.

After the PINTA at CHIKA, a four-day university-wide production work will happen on September 16 to 19, venue to be announced by the UP Visayas University Student Council (UPV USC).

On September 18, the UPV USC and CAS SC, together with other progressive organizations and groups is organizing a Cultural Night at the CAS Marquee, in front of CAS Building. Likewise, a candle-lighting ceremony to commemorate the lives of the victims of Martial Law will happen on the same date. This will be organized by the CAS SC and Student Christian Movement – UPV (SMP-UPV).
